About Arts Therapy

Arts therapy is an experiential, psychotherapeutic approach utilising arts modalities within a relationship with a trained therapist, attending to emotional, cognitive, physical and spiritual well-being.

Arts therapy is based on the idea that creativity enhances the well-being of all people and is a natural part of all cultures and human experience. It is an experiential, psychotherapeutic approach. It is holistic and aligns well with indigenous models of health and well-being.

The  arts therapy uses creative processes to help clients explore and express unconscious material that is often difficult to articulate in words. These methods are innovative, participatory and practical: they provide a supportive space for participants to ‘try on’ and practise new behaviours, and this can be more effective than merely talking about change. Creativity harnesses the imagination and a sense of play. This can help those who have limited choices in their life to use the safe space of the therapeutic environment to learn to tolerate the uncertainty of the unknown, and to become more comfortable to be able to improvise and open up new possibilities in their lives. A key feature of the creative arts therapies is that the processes are often pleasurable. This means that using the arts we are more likely to practice new patterns of more healthy behaviour.

Contemporary neurobiological research into trauma suggests that trauma has a powerful physical component and thus the first step in addressing trauma should attend to embodied trauma responses. Because the creative arts therapies are based on body awareness they can effectively address trauma and emotional and physical dysregulation. Creative arts therapies can increase resilience by improving the sense of agency and self-understanding through the ability to express feelings symbolically. This can give new perspectives on oneself and on one’s world view, which is essential in the recovery process. (ANZACATA, 2021)

As a clinical arts therapist, my approach is holistic, trauma informed and I draw strongly on somatic approaches. I work from a client led perspective, honouring you as the expert in your own experiences. My intention is to create spaces where aspects of your life and emotional experiencing can be attended to gently and creatively. I will encourage and work alongside you to find and explore ways to express yourself at your own pace. I offer a variety of arts materials and modalities to enable me to respond flexibly to what is occurring in the moment, making sure I am always attuned and sensitive to what is brought to the session.
I am committed to practising in alignment with Te Tiriti o Waitangi, honouring its articles through relationships grounded in mutual respect, shared decision-making, and equitable access to care. This includes upholding tino rangatiratanga, recognising and valuing the knowledge and identity you bring, and ensuring that the therapeutic space supports wellbeing in culturally responsive and inclusive ways.

FAQ

Do I have to be good at art to access arts therapy?

You do not need to have any prior art making experience to try arts therapy. Invitations to explore different arts modalities will be gentle and process rather than product focused. Arts therapists do not pass judgement or interpret any of your artwork, rather we support you to make your own meaning and discover your own insight.

Is arts therapy just for children?

No!  Arts therapy is for everyone! Sessions will be tailored to suit individual needs whatever your age.

What if I don't feel like making art when I come to therapy?

Creative expression is always optional and guided by your comfort. Art-making is offered as an invitation rather than a requirement, and you are never obliged to engage with the art materials if you do not wish to. You will always have choice in how you participate in sessions, whether through creative modalities, talk-based therapy, or a combination of both. Choosing not to create on a particular day is simply another valid way of engaging in the therapeutic process.

Do I have to bring anything with me?

You don’t need to bring anything along. A wide range of art materials will be available for you to use during sessions.

Can I bring a support person with me?

Parents or guardians are warmly encouraged to attend their child or young person’s first session. Adult clients may also choose to bring a trusted support person to their initial appointment.

What if I start arts therapy and then decide it's not for me?

This is not a problem, you need to be comfortable with your therapist and the type of therapy you are engaging in. If you decide you don't want to continue with arts therapy but would still like therapy of some kind, I will to my best to support you with next steps when it comes to finding the right person for you.
